Tank Abandonments

Great Plains Environmental has abandoned various underground storage tanks (USTs) in our area. Tank abandonments are conducted in specific cases where the removal of a tank is virtually impossible. Our abandonment process meets all local fire regulations and state and federal regulations.

A tank abandonment consists of determining if the tank should be abandoned rather than being removed. Once the determination has been made that abandonment is the only option, it must than be approved by the local authorities. The product line is then removed. An access is made to the top of the tank. The contents of the tank are removed. Two soil samples are collected from near the bottom of the tank. The tank is then completely filled with an inert cement slurry mixture. The vent pipe is removed and the access area is filled in with appropriate material and the original surface cover is replaced.
